Now that the snow has melted we are dealing with garbage and dirt that's been hidden for the past few months.  Garbage is easy throw it in the trash, the dirt/sand is another story.  It would be so easy to just sweep it into the street, like we sweep the dirt in the kitchen under the rug (wait, did I just admit that?).  But, sweeping it into the streets can cause problems, so  the City of Duluth has the answer to that problem with Sand Collection Sites.

The best way to dispose of the sand is to sweep it up and bring it to one of the eight dump sites that Utility Operations has set up around Duluth for your convenience.

City crews sweep road sand off the streets as quick as they can in the spring, and any additional help from citizens is greatly appreciated. IHere's what happens, if the sand isn't picked up before the spring rains, it then washes into our streams and can damage trout habitat.

The collection sites are marked with black silt fencing and are open to all Duluth residents to dump road sand from their sidewalks, curbs, and gutters.

Sites are conveniently located at:

  •   34th Ave East and Valley Drive Chester Bowl
  •   Duluth Heights Community Club
  •   Lester Park
  •   Piedmont Community Center
  •   Stowe School
  •   Wheeler Field
  •   Woodland Community Center

We need to remember that our catch basins lead directly to our streams and Lake Superior, not to the wastewater treatment plant.  That's why it's imperative we do not dump anything into them.

Contact the City of Duluth at 730-4130 during business hours or 730-4100 on evenings and weekends to report any illegal discharge or dumping. For additional information regarding this program, please contact City of Duluth Program Coordinator.
